BSX Digital Presents a new concert piece composed by noted film composer Craig Safan, ODESA. Craig describes his work in detail here:
"When I heard about the Russian invasion of the Ukraine in February of 2022, I was sick of heart. I knew that there had been a de facto invasion since 2014, but this was a major, vicious escalation. I was naively hoping we were behind this type of brutal aggression, but there is a hard vein of violence throughout our history which has never paled.
Part of my family was originally from Odesa. My great-grandfather and uncle lived there. I visited Odesa and Kyiv with my family when I was still a student and I still have a strong emotional connection to that area.
I wrote “Odesa” in March of 2022. It was performed in a different version, without chorus, in August of that year by the Marina del Rey Symphony conducted by Clyde Mitchell. I reorchestrated it for choir and orchestra for this recording. I feel the voices add the depth and emotion that I was going for when I felt the sadness, pain, and hope of that moment in 2022."
