CHORAL ORIGINALS

WE REMEMBER
This piece for mixed chorus and piano was a commission designed to honor a charter member of a large community choir in which I used to sing (having myself also been a long-standing member from the beginning). I approached the creation of both the text and the music with the idea to acknowledge the man’s unstinting and faithful service to the chorale and the high regard and love we all felt for him.

WHO ARE YOU, MY LITTLE ONE?
In this 1st-place prize-winning choral work I strive to capture the thoughts and feelings of a very young mother holding her new-born son in her arms as she ponders the wondrous events surrounding the birth of her child: an angel announcing the birth, shepherds coming to see the newly born infant, and astrologers from the East arriving to worship the baby.

MY SOUL MAGNIFIES THE LORD
This a cappella mixed chorus work is in an arch form. Halfway through the middle section, the beginning of this central area repeats, and then the opening of the entire piece repeats, followed by an extended Coda. However, with the repeat of the beginning of the middle section and the return of the very opening, both the music and the text undergo a developmental alteration. I have the text reflect a change in Mary’s perspective from that of one who is acknowledging the magnificence of God in the 3rd person to someone who has developed a one-on-one direct relationship with the Almighty: Mary goes from “God, the Almighty, has done great things for me, Holy is His Name,” to “Lord, God Almighty, You’ve done great things for me, Holy is Your Name.”

DIE SEE STEHT NIMMER STILL (The Sea Is Never Still).
The text for this mixed chorus with piano piece is a poem written by Henry Orloff, the father of a very dear friend and fellow pianist, and conveys the power and majesty of the ocean.

SOLO PIANO

OF ROSES
This suite for solo piano is inspired by the poem Life’s Roses by the 19th century American poet Alice Cary. The titles say it all, with each movement reflecting on a separate period in Life through the metaphor of collecting roses.

OUT OF TIME
This was my first suite for solo piano and was an experiment on my partin
writing a completely atonal work. It is characterized by being entirely without bar
lines and time signatures. However, such is my devotion to organizational thought
and meaningful linearity that each movement nonetheless emerges with a strong
sense of directionality and generates a “feeling” or “sense” of some kind of tonal
organization.

FLUTE AND PIANO

VOYAGER
This 5-movement suite for flute and piano is an adaptation of a song cycle of mine of the same name. Again, the movement titles say it all and evoke the moods and settings conjured up in my mind by the original poems.
