All of Antony I. Ginnane’s horror\/supernatural thrillers from this time period were scored by Brian May. For PATRICK, May composed a lush-sounding symphonic score supported by ARP synthesizer. His score for SNAPSHOT mixes dramatic orchestral music, with sublime romantic music and a fair amount of contemporary modern jazz. HARLEQUIN was scored for a variety of atonal motifs for strings, piano, and percussion, giving thematic unity through a lush, string-based love theme. THE SURVIVOR is arguably May’s most Herrmannesque score, opening with a main theme that recalls Herrmann’s Hitchcock collaborations.\u003c\/span\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003ePreviously released on compact disc by 1M1 Records in the early days of the compact disc format, Dragon’s Domain Records is excited to bring the contents of THE BRIAN MAY FANTASY FILM MUSIC COLLECTION back from the past, newly remastered by Digital Outland and presented together on two CDs.  On this release, PATRICK is presented via a short seven-minute suite that encompasses the main elements of May’s score.  Because the previous presentations of  SNAPSHOT were markedly different, we have opted on bookending this collection with both versions of the SNAPSHOT soundtrack. Disc 1 presents the 1M1 release, which follows the film sequence.  Disc 2 consists of the version assembled for Citadel Records. This version was edited and sequenced differently, but because we like this presentation very much, we wanted to include it as an alternate assembly for your listening pleasure. Our presentation of the HARLEQUIN score replicates that of the 1980 French MovieMusic vinyl release and the 1M1 CD. THE SURVIVOR appears as it did on the previous 1M1 release. Upon her arrival, Kate is told she is a descendant of the infamous vampire countess, Elizabeth Bathory, and is expected to welcome her transformation as an initiate into The Brotherhood. As the story unfolds and Kate learns more about The Brotherhood, she struggles to resist against the temptation to give in and join them in their rituals.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eTo score the film, producer Antony I. Ginnane and director Rod Hardy were looking for someone who could provide a combination of the traditional symphonic score with a bit of a Gothic choir. Writer and director Richard Franklin, a longtime friend of the producer, recommended Brian May after using him on his first feature, THE TRUE STORY OF ESKIMO NELL. May became Ginnane’s first choice of composer for his thrillers, scoring seven of them from 1978’s PATRICK through 1982’s TURKEY SHOOT (aka ESCAPE 2000). \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBrian May’s music for THIRST is comprised of three elements. First there is a thematic main theme, a lovely recurring melody that is associated with Kate and her experiences through the storyline. Secondly, the suspense music, which is often derived out of the main theme’s introductory phrase, which lends a creepy atmosphere and drives the panic and horror of the film. Finally, there is the harmonic choral music heightening the suspense as Kate becomes more inescapably immersed into the world of The Brotherhood.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBorn in Adelaide in 1934, Brian May (no relation to Brian Harold May of Queen) was one of the first composers to achieve international acclaim as an Australian composer and was best known as the composer of MAD MAX and THE ROAD WARRIOR (MAD MAX II). May received his musical training as a pianist, violinist and conductor at the Adelaide Elder Conservatorium. He joined the Australia Broadcasting Company in 1957, where he formed the ABC Adelaide Big Band, an ensemble that performed all manner of light music for broadcast, and May became a leading figure in Australian light music as a result. He moved to Melbourne in 1970 to arrange and conduct the ABC’s Melbourne Show band. Moving into film music in a period of time when Australia’s film industry was just beginning to take its place among international film circles, May composed such notable film scores as RACE FOR THE YANKEE ZEPHYR, ROAD GAMES, CLOAK AND DAGGER, DEATH BEFORE DISHONOR, MISSING IN ACTION 2, SKY PIRATES, STEEL DAWN, DR. GIGGLES, FREDDY’S DEAD: THE FINAL NIGHT MARE and BLINDSIDE. He won the Australian Film Institute Award for best original score with MAD MAX; many other awards followed, including the Golden Award from the Australian Performing Rights Association. He continued to score films until 1993, composing music for more than 30 films and many hours of television, most of which he orchestrated himself. Composer Brian May practically defined the gritty sound of this subgenre, and this score followed shortly on the heels of his seminal work on Mad Max 2 (aka The Road Warrior).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eTurkey Shoot was briefly available on a hard-to-find CD, but Dragon’s Domain now makes the album easily accessible (limited to 500 units, but also available as a download), while re-editing and remastering the score. Additionally, a series of brief cues have been stitched together into longer stretches, and there is some music not found on the earlier release. The score itself is noted for its then state-of-the-art approaches to electronics, countered by big orchestral passages.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe timpani-driven “Opening Theme” may seem unorthodox, but is effective and memorable. The aforementioned electronic material can be both trippy and intense in tracks like “Jungle Pursuit” and “Compound Music,” the latter which feels like it owes something to the folks at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. In the clinic, she meets Dan Marshall, a brilliant plastic surgeon who uses his skills to transform her into a beautiful woman. Sort of updated take on The Most Dangerous Game, the story sees two wrongfully-accused prisoners escape and attempt to evade recapture. Composer Brian May practically defined the gritty sound of this subgenre, and this score followed shortly on the heels of his seminal work on Mad Max 2 (aka The Road Warrior).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eTurkey Shoot was briefly available on a hard-to-find CD, but Dragon’s Domain now makes the album easily accessible (limited to 500 units, but also available as a download), while re-editing and remastering the score. Additionally, a series of brief cues have been stitched together into longer stretches, and there is some music not found on the earlier release. The score itself is noted for its then state-of-the-art approaches to electronics, countered by big orchestral passages.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe timpani-driven “Opening Theme” may seem unorthodox, but is effective and memorable. The aforementioned electronic material can be both trippy and intense in tracks like “Jungle Pursuit” and “Compound Music,” the latter which feels like it owes something to the folks at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. By contrast, some of the score’s large-scale acoustic writing features interesting thematic ideas with syncopated rhythms driving the action, as in “At the Camp” and “Breakout.” This dichotomy makes for an intense album experience.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWhile the experimental aspects of the electronics may put off some listeners, those familiar with May’s work will certainly want to snatch this one up. —Steven A.
