BSX DIGITAL presents a premiere release of music from the original score to A MOTHER’S GIFT, featuring music composed by Lee Holdridge (SPLASH, THE BEASTMASTER, OLD GRINGO), for the 1995 period drama directed by Jerry London, written by Earl Hamner, Jr. And Don Sipes, adapted from the novel by Bess Streeter Aldrich, starring Nancy McKeon, Adrian Pasdar, Lucy Deakins, Jeremy London, Max Wright, Judith Hoag, Randle Mell, Beata Pozniak, Adam Stoarke and James Hansen Prince.
A MOTHER’S GIFT, also known as WITH A LANTERN IN HER HAND, follows singer Margaret Deal (McKeon) and her husband William (Pasdar) as they leave their frontier town home for the dream of Pioneer life offered by the untamed Old West. They soon discover their new life is terribly hard and it begins to put a strain on their marriage.
Lee Holdridge was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on March 3, 1944, and began his musical career studying violin with Hugo Mariani after his family moved to Costa Rica. Finishing high school in Boston, he went on to study composition with Nicholas Flagello and Stephen Sondheim in New York. There, he began to explore many compositional styles — for theatrical stage, chamber, rock, and underscoring short films — before coming to the attention of singer Neil Diamond.
After collaborating on several hit albums, Diamond asked Holdridge to assist in creating the Grammy Award-winning score for JONATHAN LIVINGSTON SEAGULL (1973). That same year, he also created music for the teen love story JEREMY.
Holdridge soon became an in-demand composer, scoring such popular films as BEASTMASTER (1982), MR. MOM (1983), SPLASH (1984), OLD GRINGO (1989), INTO THIN AIR: DEATH ON EVEREST (1997), and INTO THE ARMS OF STRANGERS: STORIES OF THE KINDERTRANSPORT (2000). For television, he provided music for the mini-series EAST OF EDEN (1981), ATOMIC TRAIN (1999), 10.5 (2004), and established the musical formats for MOONLIGHTING (1985-89) and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (1987-89).
