BSX Records presents THE EDWARD DAVID ZELIFF COLLECTION, VOLUME 3, featuring music composed by Edward David Zeliff for several projects from his filmography.
WORD OF FIRE was a 16mm documentary about the history of the written Bible. Dramatizations depicted events and conditions for the spread of both the Old Testament and the New Testament to various cultures around the world throughout history. The Bible often had to be smuggled into countries with a prevailing religious and political culture that was unreceptive to the work of Christian missionaries.
HUMPTY DUMPTY was an effort to use an animated retelling of the famous nursery rhyme with Christian overtones showing the title character succumbing to temptation and turning into a “bad” person but who ultimately is helped back to health and well being after his famous fall off the wall. The animation was done in Korea and the scoring was done to a script and projected set of timings to allow for synchronizing the animation to the pre-recorded music. Lyrics for songs were created by the film’s writer/producer/director. The songs were recorded with a cartoonish voice for Humpty and with a Boris Karloff imitation to represent the tempter as portrayed by a menacing serpent. The intent was to be slightly comedic, but ultimately my music was rejected in favor of a country/western approach to the songs and the scoring. Only the instrumental versions of the songs are presented here since I have no ownership of the lyrics.
NO MORE, NO LESS was one of the several films written, produced, and directed by Bruce Baker that I scored based on true stories of youths who were provided with a home, medical care, and education by the orphanage Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos in Cuernavaca, Mexico, founded and run by the American Catholic priest Fr. Bill Wasson. This particular film ran for 90 minutes instead of the usual 30. It was presented in three parts and told the story of a teenage boy who helped his mother with her flowers that she sold in the city to eke out a living. The mother eventually winds up very ill in the hospital where she dies. Her son rushes to see her every day in the hospital only to discover suddenly the bed in her room empty, and the shock and loss are devastating for him. He is taken in by Fr. Wasson but the boy himself is diagnosed with a paralysis that cannot be cured. He attempts suicide by running his wheelchair in front of a bus, but is saved by a fellow orphan, and eventually overcomes his self pity and makes the most he can of his life in spite of his infirmity.
SAINT PAUL was another dramatization about the apostle Paul who took the message of Christianity to many regions throughout the Roman Empire. Once a persecutor of the early Christians, Paul underwent a conversion and became the leading missionary to the cities outside of Judea. This film showed Paul in prison awaiting his execution.
Edward David Zeliff, composer, pianist, arranger, and conductor, completed his Bachelor of Music in Composition at the California Institute of the Arts, and earned his Masters and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in Composition from Claremont Graduate University. He spent many years in the religious, student, and secular film communities composing and conducting scores for short subjects and features, leading studio orchestras in London and Los Angeles. Dr. Zeliff is currently Music Director at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Claremont, California.
BSX Records presents THE EDWARD DAVID ZELIFF COLLECTION, VOLUME 3, featuring music composed by Edward David Zeliff presented for the very first. The music has been mastered by James Nelson at Digital Outland and the liner notes have been written by the composer.
