Born in New York and musically educated in Paris under Nadia Boulanger, Charles Fox has made significant contributions to film and television, earning two Oscar nominations and two Emmy Awards. In collaboration with choreographer Michael Smuin, he composed the ballet score for *Zorro*.
Fox’s score is colorful, brilliantly orchestrated, and heavily influenced by Latin music, capturing the excitement of the films and the adventures of the early Californian hero. The music combines elements of comedy, pathos, and romance, showcasing Fox's imaginative style.
His diverse influences are audible, including composers such as Leonard Bernstein (in the style of *West Side Story*), Elmer Bernstein, Copland, Ravel, Bax, Prokofiev, and Respighi. Notable highlights from the score include a humorous tango for ‘Emilio and Rosa,’ which captures the prickly encounters of two porcupines circling one another; the lively ‘Movie Goers Dance’; and the dreamy, haunting ‘Zorro and Rosa Pas de Deux,’ reminiscent of the Epilogue from Bax’s Third Symphony.
In ‘Don Diego,’ the music closely resembles the orchestral introduction to Act III of Puccini’s *Tosca* and draws upon influences from Shostakovich and Prokofiev. The ‘Ballroom Scene’ continues this trend, starting with military music that shifts towards romance before incorporating castanets and waltz rhythms. This ultimately culminates in chaos as Zorro triumphantly interjects to woo Anna. The piece ‘Emilio and Theatre Manager – Fight Scene’ bursts with comic heroism, while the ballet concludes with another dreamy, romantic Pas de Deux for Emilio and Rosa.
