Holdridge is particularly known for his lyrical, harmonic orchestral music but he’s also highly adept at dramatizing action and adventure. Dragon’s Domain Records celebrates two more of them in this second collection of his work; neither of them has been released commercially until now.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eReleased in 1999, AFRICA tells the story of a drug-troubled fashion model struggling to survive after a harrowing car accident leaves her stranded in the African bush. Holdridge composed a sultry score featuring soprano sax infused with West African percussion and copious synthesizers for the project. However his score was ultimately not used in the finished film. As are a lot of film scores that are unceremoniously tossed out, Holdridge’s music for AFRICA is a worthy listening experience on its own.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eReleased in 1975, e’LOLLIPOP tells the tale of two young boys—a young white orphan named Jannie and a black boy from the local village named Tsepo who meet face-to-face in Apartheid-stricken South Africa. After his parents tragically perish in a car accident, Jannie is temporarily sent to a missionary station near Tsepo’s village until more permanent housing arrangements can be made. Jannie and Tsepo share a lollipop through the missionary window and immediately become inseparable friends. After a serious playtime injury threatens Jannie’s life, Tsepo, his fellow villagers, and the missionary doctors work tirelessly to proffer ten-year-old Jannie special medical treatment in the United States. Stricken with guilt, Tsepo takes it upon himself to travel to New York City in search of Jannie and aide his recovery. e’LOLLIPOP was directed by Ashley Lazarus starring José Ferrer, Karen Valentine, Norman Knox, and Muntu Ndebele. An alternate version of e’LOLLIPOP retitled FOREVER YOUNG, FOREVER FREE featuring a truncated version of the film was released to audiences in the United States.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eLee Holdridge was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti in 1944. He spent his early years in Costa Rica, beginning music studies on the violin at the age of ten with Hugo Mariani, then the conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica. Later, Holdridge moved to New York to continue his music studies and begin his professional career as a composer. Holdridge’s successes in New York came to the attention of Neil Diamond who brought Holdridge to Los Angeles to write arrangements for his forthcoming albums. A string of Gold and Platinum hits followed, which led to Diamond and Holdridge collaborating on the film score for JONATHAN LIVINGSTON SEAGULL. Since that time, Holdridge has scored numerous film such as SPLASH, BIG BUSINESS, MR. MOM, MICKI \u0026amp; MAUDE, 16 DAYS OF GLORY, SYLVESTER, A TIGER’S TALE, EL PUEBLO DEL SOL, OLD GRINGO, PASTIME and BROTHERS AT WAR. His television work include MOONLIGHTING, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, the complete eight hour remake of EAST OF EDEN, DREAMER OF OZ, Hallmark Hall Of Fame’s ONE AGAINST THE WIND and THE STORY LADY. Lee also began a very successful collaboration with Moriah Films, the film division of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, with the Academy Award winning documentary feature film THE LONG WAY HOME. In addition to his film career, Mr. Holdridge has had an extensive repertoire of concert works performed and recorded. Lovecraft, starring Jeffrey Combs, Barbara Crampton, Ted Sorrel and Ken Foree. The music has been newly mixed and mastered from the original 24 hour track elements.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eWritten in 1920, Lovecraft’s short story is told from the first-person perspective of an unnamed narrator who is associated with scientist Crawford Tillinghast, who creates an electronic device that emits a resonance wave, allowing the experimenters to perceive planes of existence outside the scope of our accepted reality. When they turn this machine on, they not only perceive the horrific creatures that occupy a parallel dimension that overlaps their reality but Crawford then realizes that the effect works both ways, and allows the denizens of the alternate dimension to perceive and then feed upon those observing from \u003cem data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eour\u003c\/em\u003e dimension. FROM BEYOND expands on Lovecraft’s concepts beyond the original short story, developing a storyline true to its original author’s intent and substance but developing into a modern story in which Tillinghast (Combs), here the assistant to the Resonator’s inventor Dr. Pretorius (Sorel), is similarly accused of the scientist’s murder when Pretorius is killed, by creatures from another dimension, Crawford insists, resulting in his immediate admittance to a mental hospital. After psychiatrist Katherine McMichaels (Crampton) and detective Bubba Brownlee (Foree) take the case, they escort Crawford back to the laboratory in an attempt to corroborate his account by re-creating the experiment.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe score for FROM BEYOND was created with a mixture of early synthesizers and a small orchestra of around 40 string players and some percussion. Band made a point of combining the electronics with the orchestra in an integrated manner, rather than using orchestra and the electronics as separate entities.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eFor this new release of Richard Band’s FROM BEYOND, Dragon’s Domain Records has gone back to the original 24-track master and had engineer Matt La Point completely remix the score from the ground up, under the supervision of composer Richard Band, digitally remastered by James Nelson at Digital Outland, including liner notes written by author Randall Larson, with the participation of the composer. In addition to the eighteen tracks that make up the score’s track order, this new release of FROM BEYOND includes three bonus tracks. Initially, Ridley Scott had turned to composer Jerry Goldsmith to score the film, which would reunite them after their great success on ALIEN in 1979. Goldsmith responded by writing an enchanting, organic symphonic score emphasizing strings, woodwinds and choir, a score that the composer, the director of the film and many others felt was among Goldsmith’s best work. After a disappointing test screening, studio executives encouraged Ridley Scott to replace the music with something that would be more commercially appealing to the film’s expected youth market. DINO and I, MOBSTER are two of Fried’s most exciting crime film scores. With both of these scores, Fried embraces a mix of diegetic jazz and 1950s-styled dance tunes as source music to set the mood and tone of the story and identify the environment in which the films take place. He then uses those same instruments but without the jazz harmonization, more dramatic instrumentation, using the jazz instruments for the underscoring.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBorn February, 1928 in the Bronx, Gerald Fried’s interest in music found its first fruition at the High School of Music \u0026amp; Art in New York City. He attended The Juilliard School of Music as an oboe major, graduating in 1945. Among his earliest friends was Stanley Kubrick. The two of them used to hang around Greenwich Village and talk about their budding interests, Fried’s in classical music and Kubrick’s in filmmaking. Their interests merged when Kubrick began filming DAY OF THE FIGHT, an 18-minute short about boxing. Knowing Fried was a music major, Kubrick asked him if he could write the score for his boxing picture. Fried agreed, then spent months going to the movies to learn how film scores worked, there being no schools or courses on film music in those days. Fried wrote an effective score, and Kubrick sold the film to RKO Pathé. Fried rejoined Kubrick to score four more of his films, including THE KILLING and PATHS TO GLORY, where the young filmmaker first gained his reputation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter the success of THE KILLING in 1956, Kubrick moved to Los Angeles, shortly followed by Fried, who was immediately hired to compose and arrange music for several films.
