BSX DIGITAL presents music from the television series CHICAGO STORY, featuring music composed by Stu Phillips (BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, BUCK ROGERS IN THE 25th CENTURY, KNIGHT RIDER) for the series that ran in 1981 and 1982.
CHICAGO STORY, airing from March to June 1982 on the NBC TV network, was an ambitious attempt to tell stories that revolved around the stresses experienced by the city’s legal and medical workers. It preceded producer Dick Wolf’s “Chicago Franchise” trilogy (CHICAGO FIRE, CHICAGO P.D., and CHICAGO MED) by thirty years.
Bond actress Maud Adams and Kristopher Tabori led the ensemble cast as Cook County Hospital doctors with Craig T. Nelson, Vincent Baggetta, and Molly Cheek as attorneys, and Dennis Franz, Richard Lawson, and Daniel Hugh Kelly as members of the police force. The series was created by Eric Bercovici, hot off adapting James Clavell’s SHŌGUN for NBC, and soon from a 2-hour television movie that aired a year earlier. Initially, episodes ran 90 minutes, but as the series struggled to find an audience, the network cut the show back to 1 hour, eventually cancelling it after 13 episodes.
Stu Phillips was one of several composers engaged to score the series, which included John Beal, Dick Halligan, George Romanis, and James Di Pasquale. The main title theme was created by Lalo Schifrin, who scored the original pilot film.
Composer and producer Stu Phillips has enjoyed one of the longest and most far-ranging careers of the rock & roll era, working not just in popular music but also in film and television on his way to amassing a body of work as eclectic as any of his contemporaries. Born September 9, 1929, Phillips studied at New York City's High School of Music and Art, followed by a stint at the Eastman School of Music, where he also moonlighted as an arranger for the Rochester Civic Orchestra. He entered show business proper as a copyist for television's legendary Milton Berle Texaco Hour before landing with Capitol Records and assisting composer Harry Revel and theremin virtuoso Dr. Samuel J. Hoffman on the space age pop landmark MUSIC FROM OUTER SPACE. In 1974 Phillips landed at Universal Studios, where in the years to follow he composed the music for television hits including THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN, QUINCY, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA and KNIGHT RIDER. He published his autobiography, ‘Stu Who?’ in 2003.
